Option #1: A bed with an area rug underneath

If you know you want to put your rug underneath your bed so the longer length of the rug is perpendicular to the shorter length of your bed, these are the sizes you need:
  • If you have a king-sized bed and want to put your rug underneath your bed, the minimum size rug you need to purchase is an 8x10, and the ideal size is 9x12.

  • If you have a queen-sized bed and want to put your rug underneath your bed, the minimum size rug you need to purchase is a 6.6x9.6, and the ideal size is 8x10.

  • If you have a full-sized bed and want to put your rug underneath your bed, the minimum size rug you need to purchase is a 5x8, and the ideal size is 6x9.

  • If you have a twin-sized bed and want to put your rug underneath your bed, the minimum size rug you need to purchase is a 5x7, and the ideal size is 5x8.

Option #2: Two beds with one area rug underneath.

If you have two beds in one room, always keep in mind that you want at least 2 feet of area rug on either side of the bed so your feet land on enough rug when you get out of bed. The beds should also be spaced apart to accommodate one nightstand in-between the beds. The smallest area rug that could accommodate two beds (either twin or full) is a 9x12, but we typically recommend a 10x13 or larger.

Here is an example of an area rug placement with two beds:

Option #3: A bed surrounded with runners and a small area rug at the foot

Alternative configurations for area rugs in bedrooms are scatter rugs, runners, or even 5x8 area rugs strategically placed. If you prefer this look, you can always place two matching runners on either side of your bed, and cap it off with a matching 3x5 or 4x6 at the foot. You can also place matching 3x5s or even 4x6s on either side of the bed if your space allows.

Here is an example of a bed with two runners and a 4x6 at the foot:

Option #4: A bed with a 5x8 or smaller area rug at the foot

If you have carpeting in your bedroom you may not think you can integrate an area rug into your space. However, introducing a 5x8 or smaller rug at just the foot of your bed is a great way to integrate more color and texture into your bedroom!

Option #5: Defining a space with an area rug

If your bedroom is very large, area rugs are a great way to define spaces. If you want to define a separate seating area in your bedroom, in addition to an area rug under your bed, you can arrange your seating area furniture around a rug to ground that space.

In summary, the main idea to remember is the minimum sizing rules for under beds and always maintain at least 12 inches of hard surface exposed between the rug and the wall. As always, our team is here to answer any questions you may have. Feel free to contact us at contactus@therugtruck.com!
