The Nitty Gritty - Don't Stress!

Next, you will want to determine which colors you want in your rug.

  • If you are decorating your room from scratch, you have the luxury of choosing any rug you like without the limitations of competing colors or patterns in your room. In this case, we recommend finding a rug that speaks to you, such as a piece of art would. An area rug can serve as the inspirational piece that the rest of the room is designed around.
  • If you are replacing an old area rug with a new one and do not plan to change your existing decor, it is a good idea to incorporate the area rug's colors into the textiles you already have. To make it simple, pick your favorite color that you already have in your room and filter your area rug choices by that color. It is a good idea to limit the number of colors you have in your existing textiles and your new rug. For example, if your sofa is entirely blue, getting a solid blue area rug may look excessive. Instead, opt for a rug that has touches of blue in it to accent the sofa.

A blue sofa bed is shown with a mostly beige area rug that has touches of blue in it. Surrounding the sofa is a beige table, brown sitting chairs, and a chandelier hanging from the ceiling.

Narrow your choices down to three options and review the area rug's materials and construction. Read the descriptions carefully to make sure the maintenance of each rug fits your lifestyle. For example, if you added a new puppy to your family, a white shag rug is probably not the best choice! Review your choices with your partner or your friends, and take a couple of days to weigh your options to make sure it's the one you really want.
