Choose what you want to be the focal point of a room

If you’re thinking that you want your area rug to be the center of attention in your room, opting for a brighter color or patterned rug can be a great choice. On the other hand, if you want your rug to blend in with the room you should try for a neutral color with either no pattern or a light-toned pattern.

Go for colors that will complement your room

When buying area rugs many people believe that they have to perfectly match the coloring with their space. We’re here to tell you that you don’t have to stress so much! Matching everything in your space can make for an almost artificial look. Instead, opt for colors that complement each other well. Here is a great guideto help you pick complementing colors.

Consider the color of your flooring

When you’re focused on complementing the colors of your furniture, curtains, and walls it can be easy to overlook a very important aspect: your flooring! Think about it, the one thing your area rug will never fail to be next to is your floor! If your flooring is a darker color using a bright-colored area rug will bring a great contrast between the two. Similarly, if your flooring is a lighter color a darker rug can serve as a nice contrast.

Determine your rug’s color based on the room’s use

If you want a rug in a frequently used room such as the family room then a dark-colored area rug is a better choice. Darker colors can endure more wear and tear before showing any signs of it. Darker rugs are also great if you have children or pets as stains are much less noticeable on them.

Take note of the size of your room

Darker colors tend to make a room look smaller than it is. If the room you’re working with is small then a lighter colored area rug can help give the illusion of the room being bigger.
