Important Factors to Consider When Determining the Height of your Rug

We all know that rugs come in many shapes and sizes, but did you know that they also come in different heights? As cost is usually determined by square footage, the height of the rug is not a primary factor in determining price, but there are important factors to consider when selecting a rug with a thin or thick pile.

The height of the rug is generally referred to as the pile height, and can range anywhere from 1/8” (flat-weave) to +2” (shag).

Pile height is important to consider when you think about your rug goals. Is your aim comfort and warmth? If so, a higher pile is best for you. Are your main goals to add style and color? If so, pile height is of less importance.

Pile height also becomes a consideration when you’re choosing a rug for a particular room.

As rugs with a thicker pile can be more difficult to clean, rooms such as kitchens and bathrooms are better suited for thinner rugs. Area rugs with a thicker pile do well in family rooms, bedrooms and living spaces where comfortable surfaces are a priority.

Other factors in determining the ideal pile height:

• Door Clearance:If you are using a rug in-front of a door, make sure you have enough clearance so the door can freely move over the rug.
• Tripping Hazards:Thicker area rugs have a higher profile and can serve as potential tripping hazards.
• Pets:If you have a pet that has a tendency to scratch or chew, rugs with a high pile can make very tempting pet toys!
• Special Considerations:If you have people in your home that require a walker or wheelchair, rugs with a high pile can make mobility difficult. Consider a rug with an extremely thin pile, and never forget to use a rug pad to keep the rug safely in place.
