4. OUR FAVORITE SURYA COLLECTIONS
In 1976, Surya Tiwari, a schoolteacher from North India, had a chance encounter with a buyer from what would become Macy’s. This encounter sparked the idea to create a company that would lead in go-to home accessories, and use the beauty of the Indian culture to spread art into homes across the world: A company that would soon bear Surya’s name.
Tiwari worked tirelessly to spread his hand woven carpets all around his community. A humble business, he and his son Satya would drive together all across India to make deliveries and spread Surya's art. Soon those small deliveries would turn into thousands, each retaining the homegrown feel that made Surya special in the first place.
Needless to say, the hard work paid off, as Surya has become one of the world's most beloved and trusted rug manufacturers, with Satya Tiwari at the helm. Beloved for both their home accessories and their philanthropic work, Surya's name and brand has stayed in touch with the passion that the young schoolteacher first felt in 1976.
What started as a humble business in North India has grown into something much bigger and transcendent of international borders.

Surya takes great care in its manufacturing process, only using the most effective materials in each rug. Read on to get a glimpse into the materials behind the magic!
Polypropylene is a key ingredient in creating Surya’s intricate and adaptable area rugs. It is an easy to form material found in many machine made rugs due to its resilience and wool-like quality. Hundreds of colorful designs are formed with polypropylene for a very affordable consumer price, with no compromise in comfort or beauty. Melted down from BPA free plastic, it is easy to clean and long lasting in quality, retaining vibrant colors and softness for years.

Along with polypropylene, polyester is a common material in most machine made area rugs due to the possibilities it provides to rug making. It is made by extracting polymers which are dyed in a liquid state, then reformed into yarns of all colors. Polyester is known to be naturally moisture and stain resistant, which makes it a popular material among manufacturers and consumers. Polyester rugs rarely shed, which ensures lasting beauty for years.
A rug worth your money should be soft on your feet, yet strong in longevity and easy to upkeep. Jute is a natural material made from vegetable fibers and spun into yarn that is as sustainable and resilient as it is durable. This means that long term care for your rug only requires a vacuum and occasional dusting to keep your rug in top shape. A biodegradable material, Jute helps deliver the diverse and artistic flavors that Surya has built itself on in an environmentally friendly way and for a very affordable price.
Wool is a comfortable, strong, and environmentally friendly material that is the cornerstone of any high quality, naturally made rug. Its softness and delicate, plush nature will last for years to come, with the longevity of its colors just as prominent. In addition, wool is naturally stain and soil resistant, requiring very little maintenance to bring natural and radiant beauty into your home.
Though the company has grown since its birth, the care and love behind each rug is still as prominent and important as on day one. Surya has taken great care to preserve its rich textures, gorgeous colors, and evocative aesthetic in order to bring its homegrown exotic beauty to doorsteps around the world.
Surya takes great care to bring the same traditional artisan feel to its machine woven rugs as it does for its hand crafted. The machines used in the creation of these rugs mechanically weave hundreds of spindles of fiber into a thin mesh backing, eliminating most opportunities for errors in each rug. Machine made rugs are able to use hundreds of colors at a time to create intricate and regal designs with a more uniform look than hand crafted rugs, for a lower price.

Even through its expansion, Surya’s goal of exploring the artistic opportunities of hand crafted rugs still grounds the company in its humble motivations. Surya’s handcrafted rugs are typically made either with a thread punching tool, or completely by hand. The tufting method punches threads of wool or fiber into a stretched canvas, after which a backing is applied to the rug. With tufting, the manufacturer is able to make multiple loops at varying lengths without the use of a machine. This results in durable rugs made in a time and cost efficient way.

Knotting is the most intricate rug making process, requiring each thread to be woven completely by hand. Thousands of threads are individually knotted into the canvas, calling for a time consuming process that ultimately yields the beauty to match it. This difficult process is handled with great care, and ultimately produces rugs with excellent longevity, and an unmatched care for every thread in even the most intricate of designs.
Surya has many unique collections of rugs, each exploring its very own style that is sure to add its own special flavor to your home. Here are some of our favorites!
